Tsunao Yamai
Konparu noh performer. Holder of important intangible cultural properties (comprehensive certification). He is a director of the Headquarters of the Noh Music Association. Executive Director of Konparu Enman Kai, a public interest incorporated association. He is a member of the Performance Environment Improvement Department of the Japan Association of Performing Arts Performers’ Associations (Geishakyo).
Studied under the late 79th-generation family’s head Nobutaka Konparu, 80th-generation family Yasuaki Konparu, and Noriko Tomiyama. Under the influence of his grandfather, who was a Konparu Noh performer, he staged for the first time at the age of five. Since then, he has performed a number of traditional and legendary noh songs. Noh performances, school performances, and lectures are held nationwide. He is a lecturer at NHK Culture Center Aoyama Main School, Adult Holiday Club, and Asahi Culture.
He has also been instrumental in popularizing Noh overseas, including performances at the Grammy Museum in LA, participation in the Edinburgh International Theatre Festival in Scotland, noh performances in Canada (leader), and starring in the Canadian artist’s Noh opera “Kayoi-Komachi”. 2014 Agency for Cultural Exchange Envoy.
He has collaborated with Western-style Japanese and other artists and appeared in contemporary theater. NHK taiga dramas “Gou” and “Sanada Maru” appearances and Noh supervision and guidance. The Konparu is the oldest school of Noh with a history of 1400 years that Hideaki Toyotomi also loved. Says, “I’m working hard to enlighten the Japanese heart”.
